چکیده

There is a paucity of data concerning the changes in circulation occurring during swimming in fish. Data reported in the literature have been obtained from either restrained, anaesthetized or operated fish (Greene, 1904; Hart, 1945; Johansen, 1962; Robertson et al. 1966). Such procedures can have marked effects on fish (Fry, 1957). It is therefore surprising that little attention has been directed towards measuring parameters of circulation and respiration in unrestrained, unanaesthetized, intact fish (Randall, Smith & Brett, 1965). Recently, methods have been developed for measuring blood pressures using indwelling cannulae (Smith & Bell, 1964; Holeton & Randall, 1967). These techniques, combined with those of Brett (1964) which use varying water velocities to produce variations in swimming speeds in fish, permit measurement of various parameters of circulatory and respiratory systems in swimming fish. The present study was undertaken to examine the effects of swimming on circulation and respiration using free swimming, unanaesthetized rainbow trout.

Changes of gas concentrations in blood and water during moderate swimming activity in rainbow trout.

In a previous paper (Stevens & Randall, 1967) changes in blood pressure, heart rate and breathing rate during activity were reported. Interpretation of these results as to the physiological significance of such changes can be expanded with a knowledge of any concurrent changes in gas concentrations in blood and water afferent and efferent to the gills. Recent technical developments permitting g...

Changes in blood pressure in the rainbow trout during hypoxia.

The influence of hypoxia upon the heart rate and the rate and amplitude of breathing in the tench has been reported by Randall & Shelton (1963). Satchell (1961) demonstrated that dogfish respond to anoxia by decreasing heart rate, temporarily increasing dorsal aortic blood pressure and increasing the mean and pulse pressure in the ventral aorta. These fish were restrained and anaesthetized. In ...

No evidence for a bioenergetic advantage from forced swimming in rainbow trout under a restrictive feeding regime

Sustained swimming at moderate speeds is considered beneficial in terms of the productive performance of salmonids, but the causative mechanisms have yet to be unequivocally established. In the present study, the effects of moderate exercise on the bioenergetics of rainbow trout were assessed during a 15 week growth experiment, in which fish were reared at three different current speeds: 1 BL s...

Adrenergic control of venous capacitance during moderate hypoxia in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): role of neural and circulating catecholamines.

Central venous blood pressure (P(ven)) increases in response to hypoxia in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), but details on the control mechanisms of the venous vasculature during hypoxia have not been studied in fish. Basic cardiovascular variables including P(ven), dorsal aortic blood pressure, cardiac output, and heart rate were monitored in vivo during normoxia and moderate hypoxia (P(W)...
